The first and most obvious problem is that the results of this test simply cannot be trusted. Meanwhile, the ping took about 87.2 ms, whereas most competitors keep latency results as low as 8 ms. The mean of the measured download speeds was 43.8 Mbps, with an average upload speed of 11.6 Mbps. When it came to the results, the Verizon internet speed test took an average of 2.4 seconds to load, and 55.4 seconds to operate.

We took some screenshots of the tests ― which you can find below ― so you can get a feel for their interface. Not only did Verizon’s test fail to properly analyze the speed of our connection, it also takes nearly a full minute to run ― many other speed tests take about half as long. Unfortunately, the results were incredibly inaccurate.

In addition, we can use the Android or iOS location services to determine a more accurate location fix.To analyze the Verizon Fios speed test, we used a connection that typically delivers speeds around 250 Mbps, and we tested our connection on other competing speed tests to see how well Verizon matched up. This is the server that's 'closest' on the network, and usually provides the most accurate results. We then ping those nearby servers, and choose the server with the lowest result, meaning it took the shortest time for a response. Once you press Begin Test, we take your location and determine up to five nearby servers (using spherical geometry). After loading the list of 1000+ servers and the appropriate map tiles, we can display the map of hosts on the front page. This tells us where to center the map-but more importantly, it also tells us which servers are nearby. The first step begins before you even press the button: we look up your IP address in a GeoIP database to determine your approximate location.
